Character Bible

Character Bible gives a summary about the characteristics and personalities of each role in a script and helps the actors and actresses to better express themselves as that character as they will understand how they are like. Here is a step by step tutorial of doing character bibles.

1) Have an idea of where the story is going. Does it take place in hours or over years? This will affects the type of people your characters will be.

2) Decide on the desired type of characters in your script. Be thorough abut this decision. Know everything from age to race to religious affliation, family background and everything in between.

3) Research your characters. Once you know who they are and where they are going, give them realistic representations in your script.

4) Know about your characters and that includes their family. Be clear on where your character fits into their family and the relationship they have with them

5) Include a basic summary of each character you write. The basic summary will include age, weight, height, gender, schooling, occupation, where they are originally from and where they currently live.

Write a detailed biography of each character using the information you've accumulated in Steps 1 - 5.

Sicko is a 2007 documentary film directed by American filmmaker Michael Moore. The film investigates health care in the United States, focusing on its health insurance and the pharmaceutical industry. The movie compares the for-profit, non-universal U.S. system with the non-profit universal health care systems of Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Cuba.

Almost fifty million Americans are uninsured while the remainder, who are covered, are often victims of insurance company fraud and red tape. Interviews are conducted with people who thought they had adequate coverage but were denied care. Former employees of insurance companies describe cost-cutting initiatives that give bonuses to insurance company physicians and others to find reasons for the company to avoid meeting the cost of medically necessary treatments for policy holders, and thus increase company profitability.

In Canada, Moore describes the case of Tommy Douglas, who was voted the greatest Canadian in 2004 for his contributions to the Canadian health system. Moore also interviews a microsurgeon and people waiting in the emergency room of a Canadian public hospital.

Against the backdrop of the history of the American health care debate, opponents of universal health care are set in the context of 1950s-style anti-communist propaganda. A 1960s record distributed by the American Medical Association, narrated by Ronald Reagan, warns that universal health care could lead to lost freedoms and socialism. In response, Moore shows that socialized public services like police, fire service, the United States Postal Service, public education and community libraries have not led to communism in the United States.

The origins of the Health Maintenance Organization Act of 1973 are presented using a taped conversation between John Ehrlichman and President Richard Nixon on February 17, 1971; Ehrlichman is heard telling Nixon that "...the less care they give them, the more money they make", a plan that Nixon remarked "fine" and "not bad". This led to the expansion of the modern HMO-based health care system. Connections are highlighted between Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), the lobbying arm of the largest drug companies in the United States, lobbying groups in Washington D.C., and the Congress. Hillary Clinton, a champion of the Clinton health care plan, is shown as a crusader for change, appointed to reform the health care system in the United States by her husband, newly elected President Bill Clinton. Her efforts are met with heavy-handed criticisms by Republicans on Capitol Hill, and right-wing media throughout the country, who characterize her plan as the harbinger of socialism. When she is defeated, her punishment is to "never speak of it again while in the White House." Seven years later, her silence is rewarded, as she becomes a Senator for the State of New York, a victory made possible in part by money from the health care industry; she is second only to Rick Santorum as the Senate's highest recipient of health care industry campaign donations.

In the United Kingdom, a country whose National Health Service is a comprehensive publicly funded health care system, Moore interviews patients and inquires about in-hospital expenses incurred by patients, only to be told that there are no out-of-pocket payments. Moore visits a typical UK pharmacy, where pharmaceuticals are free of charge for persons under 16 or over 60, and subsidized in most cases for everyone else; only a fixed amount of £6.65 (about $10) per item on a prescription was charged, irrespective of cost to the NHS. Further, NHS hospitals employ a cashier, part of whose job is to reimburse low-income patients for their out-of-pocket travel costs to the hospital. Interviews include an NHS general practitioner, an American woman residing in London, and Tony Benn.

In France, Moore visits a hospital and interviews the head of obstetrics and gynaecology and a group of American expatriates. Moore rides with the "SOS Médecins", a 24-hour French medical service that provides house calls by physicians.[7] Moore discovers that the French government provides many social services, such as health care, public education (including universities), vacation and day care for $1 an hour and neonatal support that includes cooking, cleaning, and laundry services for new mothers.

Returning to the United States, interviews disclose that 9/11 rescue workers who volunteered after the September 11, 2001 attacks were denied government funds to care for physical and psychological maladies they subsequently developed, including respiratory disease and PTSD-induced bruxism. Unable to receive and afford medical care in the U.S., the 9/11 rescue workers, as well as all of Moore's friends in the film needing medical attention, appear to sail from Miami to Cuba on three speedboats in order to obtain free medical care provided for the enemy combatants detained at the U.S. Guantanamo Bay detainment camp. The group arrives at the entrance channel to "Gitmo" and Moore uses a megaphone to request access, pleading for the 9/11 victims to receive treatment that is on par with the medical attention the "evildoers" are receiving. The attempt ceases when a siren is blown from the base, and the group moves on to Havana, where they purchase inexpensive medicine and receive free medical treatment.[8] Providing only their names and birth dates, the volunteers are hospitalized and receive medical attention. Before they leave, the 9/11 rescue workers are honored by a local Havana fire station.

Finally, Moore addresses the audience, emphasizing that people should be "taking care of each other, no matter the differences". To demonstrate his personal commitment to this theme, Moore decides to help one of his biggest critics, Jim Kenefick, webmaster of MooreWatch.com. According to a blog posting, Kenefick feared he may have to shut down his anti-Moore website because he needed US $12,000 to cover the costs of medical treatment for his sick wife. Not wanting the U.S. health care system to trump Kenefick's ability to express his opinion, Moore sends Kenefick the money "anonymously".

Sicko was nominated for an Academy Award for Documentary Feature.[23] It was also commended in the Australian Film Critics Association 2007 Film Award for Best Documentary.Sicko also won an award in the Cannes Film Festival.

Familiar Patterns of Story

While working on a script for WEYA 2012, I came across this website my friend recommended me to take a look for reference in crafting stories.

Tim Hull shares on his website how we can identify and create different familiar patterns of stories.
"The types of conflict that reside within a story carry with them a unique narrative code, much like the genetic code within DNA. And just as a different combination of certain genomes determines the eventual type of human they’re responsible for, the mixture of these dramatic narrative forces ultimately decides the personality of a story."

The 4 major situations of conflicts can occur is simplified on this diagram and it is outline by the dramatica theory of a story.A problem or any conflict can find itself in one of this boxes in this chart. A good writer uses the 4 important throughlines to successfully convey the entire scope of the overview of the story. Such details in stories include main character, influential characters, romantic stories and Overall Story, four throughlines and four general Areas of Conflict. Place a throughline in each area and the story will feel complete. Insert them in a similar pattern to other stories and the stories themselves will begin to feel strikingly familiar.

Where an Author ultimately decides to focus the conflict in their story determines the personality of that story. A popular combination, especially in Western culture, has the Main Character in a Problematic Situation, the Influence Character in Fixed Attitude, the Overall Story in Activity and the Relationship Story in a Thought Process. Why? Chances are the predominant gender behind most Western film (i.e., men) find it more comfortable placing a conflict they don’t quite understand (Thought Processes) in a throughline they generally don’t get (Relationships).

Personally I believe using similar concepts and theories in a story improves and enriches the contents and relevant themes found in a story. This makes it useful when doing stories in essays or in scripts.

Missions Weekly Campus Crusade Meeting

Today OM(Operation Mobilisation) ships ministry is shared with me about how people take the ship doulos hope to sail to other seas to spread the gospel by being a missionary. The crew ranges people from more than 41 different nationalities sailing to different continents to share the gospel to many people from different nationalities.
Jiamin, a missinary who was serving on Doulos for 4 years shared about her experiences as a missionary and her life testimony about how she started doing missions work. She continued to stir the passion for me to be a full time missionary in the future after I graduate from university. Her book that records her journals entry when she was on the ship is a very interesting book about her adventures in the perilous seas when there are choppy waves during storms and torrential rain. Thank God for this obedient daughter of God to share and inspire more youths like me to do God's mission and to fulfil the great commission stated in Matthew 28:18-20.

Pulau Ubin (Chek Jawa)

After looking at the photos, you guys should realise how beautiful and amazing Pulau Ubin and Tanjong Chek Jawa is. Pulau Ubin is a really nice island where one can still see the 1970s village/kampong side of Singapore. Cycling there is really awesome as you get to experience and observe nature while cycling. I went with my parents and their church friends to Pulau Ubin from Singapore on 7th November. It was a great and fun trip. I totally love the place:)

You guys should check it out if you are in Singapore next time. Do visit Pulau Ubin. You can take a bum boat from Changi Jetty at Changi Village to Pulau Ubin at just 5 dollar for 2 way trip( SGD$2.50 for 1 way trip).

It was a nice evening on 9th November 2011.The photos basically sum up what this event is about. We came to Singapore Arts Museum@8Q to discuss and generate ideas/solutions to help improve Singapore in 5 different key areas. They are namely 1) Live, 2) Work Live, 3) Play, 4) Give, 5) Learn.

Celebrating Tagore

Many of you will wonder who Rabindranath Tagore is. He's the 1940 Nobel literature Peace Prize award winner from Bengali, India. He's a poet, a composer of songs, writer of children literature, a founder of a university and a essay writer.

This is Tagore's most famous book of poems that won him the nobel literature peace prize in 1940 contributed by British Writers who won nobel literature peace prize award before him. Its the "Gitanjali"

Celebrating Tagore is dedicated to Rabindranath Tagore, the first Asian Nobel Laureate & one of the greatest poets and artists India has ever produced. It is intended to showcase an array of his great works and philosophy. Its held at Esplanade Recital Sutudio in Singapore on 6th novemeber. Bengali singers, Bengali Musicians and a Bengali Journlaist shares about Mr Rabindranath Tagore's works and songs. Jahar Dasgupta, A a painter is also introduced and his paintings are really colourful, attractive and insightful. Jahar Dasgputa founded the Painters' Orchesta(completed 41 years in 2010) , one of the oldest artist groups in India with his 6 other artist friends:) He has held solo exhibitions in Laxmana Art gallery, Lalit Kala Academy, Chitrakoot, Academy of Fine Arts etc. He has held solo in abroad like Gallery Hansmania(Norway) and Club Bangladesh(Sweden).He is the Vice President of Academy of Fine Arts in Kolkata where he lives and works. Sankarlal Bhattacharjee is a Bengali journalist and author and is one of the best living post writers in Bangla. He is in charge of writing articles for a Bengali local newsppaer and has written 40 books of fiction and non fiction. His book on Tagore is likely to be out in September.

It was a eye opener as it was my first time learning about India Artists especially poets. I learn about many other popular nobel literature prize winners( William B Yeats etc) and how they helped Mr Tagore with winning the prestigious literature nobel peace prize. It was great to be able to appreciate and enjoy Bengali music with the tabla, the keyboard and the voice. I really love the Bengali music and believe Tagore is a impressive literary giant where his poems are so insightful and philosophical. It is yet so realistic and speak of a naked man in all honesty.

Rangoli Making

What's a Rangoli? Many will ask such a simple question. Actually its basically a (1)traditional decorative folk art of India. These are decorative designs made on floors of living rooms and courtyards during Hindu festivals and are meant as sacred welcoming areas for the Hindu deities.(1)Today I went to find the elderly of St John's Home for the elderly to help them out to make rangolis for the Elderly there. It was behind wantho avenue but we took such a long time to find it. I managed to have a good chat with the taxi drive and now I have his number;)When I reached there, I realised, it was quite big:) I went into the lounge to help. I did translation job when elderly chinese ask the indian volunteers how to do? I helped them translate. It was great helping them too. I helped a “水仙”uncle and used calligraphy and wrote God loves you and my name and my phone number so he can contact me anytime. Such opportunities are so rare.

Cannes Film Festival 2011

Hey guys its me again:) Cannes Film Festival. It happens in May 2011 this year. Thierry Fremaux mentions that " he story continues, the story begins, the story is invented and re-invented every year and at the same time, the festival team and the city of Cannes prepare to greet artists and professionals from around the world. With, shall we say, love, appetite and impatience." These few sentences in itself speak so much in how special every film competition is to all who are film obsessed fans:)

This history of the festival is rather interesting. (1)The International Film Festival was created on the initiative of Jean Zay, Minister for Education and Fine Arts, who was keen to establish an international cultural event in France to rival the Venice Film Festival. The first edition of the Festival was originally set to be held in Cannes in 1939 under the presidency of Louis Lumière. However, it was not until over a year after the war ended that it finally took place, on 20 September 1946. It was subsequently held every September – except in 1948 and 1950 – and then every May from 1952 onwards. The Festival de Cannes, which is managed by a Board of Directors, was registered as an “Association loi de 1901” (or non-profit association in France) in 1972 (1).

In the 1950s, the Festival became more popular thanks to the attendance of celebrities such as Kirk Douglas, Sophia Loren, Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot, Cary Grant, Romy Schneider, Alain Delon, Simone Signoret and Gina Lollobrigida.

“The aim of the Festival is to encourage the development of the art of filmmaking in all its forms, while fostering and maintaining a spirit of collaboration among all filmmaking countries” (extract from the Festival policy, 1948.)

In 1997, on the 50th anniversary of the Festival de Cannes, the world’s greatest directors came together on stage to award the Palme des Palmes to Ingmar Bergman.

In 2007, to celebrate 60 years of the Festival de Cannes, 33 of the world’s greatest directors were invited to take part in the anniversary film, To Each His Own Cinema, each shooting a 3-minute short film about the rooms in which films are projected in cinemas.

→ The Marché initially attracted a few dozen participants and offered a single screening room. Today, 10,000 buyers and sellers from around the world flock to Cannes every year, making it the number one international market for film professionals.

In 2000, Gilles Jacob was elected President of the Festival by members of the Board of Directors. He replaced Pierre Viot, who had been in the role since 1985 and who had himself taken over from Robert Favre-Le Bret. From 2001 to 2005, Gilles Jacob was supported by Véronique Cayla, the Managing Director, and Thierry Frémaux, the Artistic Director.

In July 2007, Thierry Frémaux was appointed Director-General of the Festival by the Board of Directors.

It looks interesting but I guess to participate in such a film festival, one needs lots of experience and a higher budget to product such a film.

Yellow Ribbon Run 2011

This is a pretty fun run.
Yellow Ribbon Movement Singapore is established to give criminals and ex offenders a chance to return back to society for employment opportunities. In this year's run, there was both the 6km and the 10km one. I ran the 6km one without tag because I went last minute.:) I totally love the performance at the stage. It was awesome with those instruments- saxophone and percussion( conga drum) . I loved the Singapore Police Force
who did Scotland music. It was very soothing to the ear:)

Missions

Based on dictionary.com defintion, Missions is a group or committee of persons sent to a foreign country to conduct negotiations, establish relations, provide scientific and technical assistance. It is a noun. Recently I went for a National Missions Conference and I felt very encouraged to see so many people going to Asia from the West to see more people coming to know Jesus christ and powerful testimonies rocking from Indonesia to Nepal to China and then to Cambodia:)

Study Session at School

Life just keeps getting funner.
I missed 2 hours of lecture sadly today. Today morning 9am -11am was the School of Life Science And Chemical Technology Ngee Ann Polytechnic 2011 Graduation Ceremony. Watching the streaming version, I was impressed and happy of my seniors who won awards. I enjoyed the video for the graduating class of 2011 and also the speech by the vaedictorian.

After that, I finally made my Bank Card to draw and deposit money:)
Life was good and fun although it was raining when I reached school. I proceeded to the library to find useful reference books for the modules I am doing.

I din realised I missed my 2 hours of Biopharmaceutical Production Lecture. When Lab started, everyone started questioning me why I missed the lecture. I said I thought there wasn't lecture.
Sub culturing is as usual very fun. The steps are basically very standard. This time we seeded a higher density of vero cells( monkey cells) into T75 flasks( 75cm square base flasks).

After having CCA meeting with friends, I went to study with my friends. Engineering Block at night is the best place to study. It is so quiet. There are so many vending machines( drinks, sandwich, snacks) and a water cooler at my compound which has tables and chairs. Toilets are nearby. It is the ideal spot in Ngee Ann to slack. We had a very efficient time working at our books and we left in the end.
When we left, we saw our year 1 lecturer with his friend lecturer at the staff lodging area, it was super funny how I was guessing if it was him.

Although today was a tired day, it was really fruitful and enjoyable:)

ACM exploration

Amazing Race Singapore Civic Section Checkpoint 1

After that I proceeded to the Ancient Civilisation Museum(ACM) thinking it was the art house. They have similar architecture. I went to see the Retrospective Architecture Year 1 Year End Project Exhibition for NUS. After that, I walked around and read up on Calligraphy especially how calligraphy is used.

Identity is forged and can be used as part of calligraphy to show which a group of people belong to.

Exploration is important in Calligraphy especially in delivering the strokes well and in different words of how they are written

After that, I headed to see the Singapore River Gallery.

NUS Retrospective

According to wikepedia, Architecture is the art and science of designing and erecting buildings and other physical structures.

I went for Retrospective - A National University of Singapore (NUS) Year one Architecture Year End Exhibition at Ancient Civilisations Museum (ACM). The slogan for Retrospective is "Design.Retrospection.Dissatisfaction". As what Associate Professor Wong Yun Chii( Head, Department of Architecture) in the Retrospective booklet says, design in the year 1 architecture students learn to internalize and even to essentialize it to treat design as natural core of daily understanding. Retrospective generally means to take a look back at events that already have taken place. Dissatisfaction are given about designs and they are psychological in nature and serve a vital social function to motivate people to work towards better standards.

The first song the band played was THE SHOW by Lenka. I totally love it.

Today is a very fun and exciting day for me.
After waking up at late morning, I went out to Saint Joseph's Institution (SJI) to meet my juniors in Chinese Cultural Society (CCS).

Here is the school:)

My juniors are representing my school to perform in the Annual 2011 Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Chinese Drama Competition. Today they are going to Paya Lebar Methodist Girls School( PLMGS). Upon reaching SJI, I decided to meet up with them. I went to meet them near the bio labs which is at the Sec 2/ Sec 1 block.

After talking to many of them, I decided to take a look at their props. It was very cool. They had this big Giant Iphone type of board with wheels. Sticking out of the board are two hands which can be waved around using both hands. The other prop we have is basically a GIANT Mallet. Basically it is made up of the stick froom a broomstick and one of the cardboard boxes used to store Papers/books.

We set off and reached PLMGS at 2:10pm. After reaching there, I went to help out in filming of their practises there. It was basically their only recee trip to see the stage space they are going to use for the competition. They practise acting at the stage. Each position on stage is important. The lightings is also adjusted and changed to fit the different scenes. After looking through the scenes in the complete drama, the storyline is very interesting. However, it lacked substance because it is not sharp enough especially the drum rhythms and the dialogues. The movements also lacked power and sharpness. I realised the script was very interesting:) I filmed one complete rehearsal trial run they did and other short footages of them practising on the video camera.

After that, cyber cafe was my next location. After the cyber cafe visit for 1 hour, I rushed for my piano lesson. I rushed and reach my teacher's house late. I ran through the pieces and sight reading. I realised that rhythmns is very important in music. One thing I learnt from 1 piece is getting it right at the first time with the dynamics, the textures, the style, notes and the tempo right. It was tough but I slowly gain experience and it became easier. I also learnt how to glide your fingers to make different effects on the piano. I decided to practise more this week so I can become more proficient and effective on the piano.

Bboying Fun (10 April 2011)

It's great to be able to bboy and practise together with selva and cypher crazed crew at a community centre near Kovan station.

1) This was the first time I managed to practise handstands against the wall using cardboard to ensure the wall does not turn dirty.
2) This is the first time I managed to practise a couple of 6 steps and able to teach a newbie bboy how to do a proper 6 step by guiding him slowly through each step.
3) This is the first time I got a blister after practising and I am so happy about it because it simply shows I had put in enough effort that day.
4) I managed to combine toprock moves with coin drops and footwork movements on the floor with the proper grip.

It was the best session I have ever done on 1 session timeslot. I felt I have gained much more stamina and sharpness in each move:)

Today was even better than before:)
Lingyu, Jia lin and I went out distributing flyers at harbourfront area and we had a much more open crowd who were all so willing to accept it and we gave finish within one and a half hours. We were all so happy especially me and lingyu because we finished the stack of flyers so fast here compared to the previous days we did this week at Bugis and city hall area.

After lunch, it was going to Clementi Touch young arrows to help teach the primary school children. It was very fulfilling to teach english and explaining words in cloze passages and comprehension passage and how to answer the questions in each section. The games we played after that was broken telephone in which they had to act out what is being told to them or acted out to them by Andy( the game master).

After the community service session, I went to WAT meeting organised by my church. We were made up of mostly 17-19 year old teenagers. Since I came in late with my cell brother, I only managed to hear the message shared by pastor Melissa. She shared about her life testimony and her life story when she was 17-19 years old and some bible verses as encoruagement and motivation for the WAT congregation. After the message we split up into different schools( Polys, JCs, MI, ITE, Army Camps) to organise events to help us pray for our school. It was a fulfilling session and great to see many of my school mates from Ngee Ann poly. Some announcements were made during this session :)

The Church Service was the most interesting. I went in late and managed to get in to 2nd floor with the help of my cell brother because I was having dinner just before service:) After worship, the message shared was by Pastor Patrick Chew. He shared about how we can still be christian babies although we have been christians for a long time. He gave us 3 main attitudes in which we can grow in spiritual maturity.
1) Be Determined to Grow
2) Be Eager to Learn
3) Be Committed to Practise
The verses taken are

Batam Service Learning Trip Outing

It was the 8th April 2011 (Friday) and the Ngee Ann Poly school of life science chemical technology students who went to batam on a service learning trip to help the batam orphanages had a mini outing and reunion to meet up and have fun during the holidays. Only 5 people managed to go. There is only Wee Min, Hisyam, Yeung Ling, Zhe Huan and me:)

We had so much fun that day:)These are the places we went.
We went to 1) Sentosa Palawan Beach, 2) Vivo City, 3) Marina Square 4) Marina Bay Sands 5)Esplanade (outdoor theatre), 6) Art Science Museum Marina Bay Sands.

Here are the photos. Although it was a small reunion. We would always remember and enjoy the fellowship, jokes and the conversations we guys had at the outing:)

Batam Sevice Learning Trip (17-21 March 2011)

This was a highlight trip for me this year. I went with 51 of my other NP LSCT friends and 4 lecturers and we went Batam to help out the orphanages.

Upon reaching batm on the first day, we went for team building activities to bond ourselves closer. After that, we had lunch and we went to visit different orphanges( Orphanage Gracia, Orphanage Viran and Orphanage Bethesda) After visiting these different orphanages, we went to Kepri mall to buy supplies we need( Birthday Party Hats, Medicines in First Aid Kits, Snacks etc) JCO donuts there was nice and cheap.

18 March 2011
After breakfast, we dispatched into different groups, we headed off to different orphanges. One bus went to Orphanage Viran. The other bus headed to Orphanage Gracia. We went to purchase the paints and brushes so we can help give the walls in the orphanages a fresh new coat of pain. I was with the bus that's going to Orphanage Gracia. At Orphanage Gracia, Darren, Chuan Yan, Catherine, Letty and me started to start drawing out pictures we are going to draw as the murals for the room. After discussing with the matron of the orphanage, we started drawing a Waterfall flowing into water bodies and another one showing Jesus with many children. Personally, I was very impressed with Darren's drawing of Jesus. It really resembled the Jesus he was copying from the image on his iphone. After lunch, we went to Viran to celebrate the orphans birthday and to meet up with the rest of the team. We offered them clothes we had brought and also gifts. It was my first time singing Happy Birthday in Malay.

19 March 2011
After breakfast we did the same thing. Completion of the murals on the wall of a classroom in Orphanage Gracia. Others who went Gracia helped paint the walls and others helped do first aid:) Others just started playing the orphans once the painting job is done. After lunch, we went to Bethesda to celebrate the birthdays of the orphans there. First the orpahns sang Mighty to Save and other christian songs. I was really touched and can feel God's pressence when they sing those songs. It was a sense of peace and joy in times of uncertainty. After that we started giving the clothes and gave the children snacks to eat to enjoy:)

20 March 2011
After Breakfast, we headed out to 2 other orphanages to give them supplies. We visited one orpahange which had an Islam Boarding school too. We started teaching a group of the orphans english. It was great to see how enthusiastic they are although some of them started to lose attention. Others did first Aid. Before we left the place, we saw the orphans( the guys) cheering and it was super cool. It was like a military cheer and war cry that can easily startle enemies:) After that we headed to Santa Theresa Orphanage and started helping out once we reach. We passed by the bridge through Tontong Island:) The Batam bridge separates Tontong Island from Mainland Batam. It had a spectacular view of the sea and the Islands:) Upon reaching the orphanage, we gathered them in groups, played games with them and gave them clothes. haha it was fun to play with them. When they sang christian songs, It was another reminder how God is so true to these kids even loving them that you can actually sense it from how they sang the songs. After we returned, we went back hotel. Dinner time was good seafood and karaoke after that. Although it was old songs, we still had much fun singing them.

Today is the last day of the trip. We mainly went to a lot of places to shop. Last shopping centre we visited was Nagoya Hill Shopping Centre. This is the biggest shopping centre in Batam. A&W was great. Wee Min, Darren, Chuan Yan and me went to the lan shop to play CS for 1 hour. Haha. It was fun but seeing how funny it is to backstab them was really reaction time. After that, we just walked around the area. Personally, I wanted to shop but I had shop too much recently so I decided to cut down on the cash I use. After the shopping, we went back Singapore.

11- 13 March ( Chou family reunion)

11 March 10``
I have just reached Taoyuan airport with my family and my cousins at late morning. We took a bus to Eastern Villa which was at Taoyuan county, Yangmei city. It was very cold once we reach there because it was at a mountaineous area. We went for lunch which was steamboat. It was really awesome to eat steamboat there as it helps you to keep warm. I totally love the spicy sauce they use as the soup to cook your food in it. My udon was totally awesome. I just went for more food after finishing cooking the food in the pot. After lunch, it was free and easy programme and a great time to enjoy and relax. We could go to the SPA facility to relax. However, being the typical Singaporeans who are scared of cold, we didn't go. My granduncle started with a introductory speech to invite all of us to come for this Annual Chou family reunion. After that, my grandaunty shared about her parents with us. It was really interesting hearing her stories of how great our great granduncles and great grandaunties were.

After breakfast, my Taiwan distant uncle shared about how the Chou family legacy is not a religion of Christianity but it should be the spirit of how the younger generation relate to God with a closer relationship because that would last and that would be how the legacy and grace of God can be passed on. It was a fundamental concept that is often compromised nowadays. After that, we broke up in groups of 3 praying. Each family introduce the members who come and it was great seeing how big this who Family tribe is. Seeing new faces and recognising them as relatives just proves how unfamiliar I am with my distant relatives in Taiwan. We splitted into different groups to start preparing for our skit of our great grandfathers' life and we started discussing our script and what we guys were going to do. I got the oldest great granduncle one. After that it was phototaking time for everyone who came and resting time for everyone. At 4:40, our granduncle started telling us about our great granduncles' and great grandaunty's stories and how they were taught by them when my grandparents, granduncles and grandaunty were only kids. After dinner, it was song singing before we started with our actual skits. It was really interesting and funny to see how good some of the Chou family had good actors. I had a great time watching it. I was helping out videocamming the different skits. After the end of all the skits, prizes were awarded to every team. Another Granduncle and another Grandaunty continued the story telling time about interesting and unique events that happen when they were young. It was really such a privilege to be able to hear such stories.

After breakfast we had a general sunday service and my granduncle's wife started telling us about how we should grow in lord. She shared with us many testimonies and examples. It was living a christian life according to biblical scriptures and text references. After that, it was planning for the next committee who will prepare the next family reunion next year. It was also choosing the different coordinators to coordinate the people coming for the reunion for those who are not living in Taiwan. After farewell lunch, we went on our separate ways and wished goodbye to our relatives before leaving. We took High Speed Railway from Taoyuan to Kaoshiung.

It was mainly visiting my grandfathers and grandmother's grave. It was knowing more about who they really are when they were still alive. After that we went back for mostly a lot of shopping at kaoshiung:) Shop till wallets burst:) haha quite impressed with the things I find there:) The clothes look much better than those you can find in Singapore.

It's the last day in Taiwan. After taking high speed railway with my sis from kaoshiung to taoyuan, we made our way to the airport by taking a shuttle bus. We then flew off back to Singapore :)

It was a great day today as there was no school.
First place I went was back school to ask my lecturers some questions.
I asked about the Batam Orphanage Service learning trip for NP LSCT during the March holidays as I was really interested to go to help out. However it clashes with my Taiwan Trip. Therefore to make it for the Batam trip, I will sacrifice my time in Taiwan and come back Singapore earlier.
After that I went to ask about IPC practical because I found my IPC practical manual with the original IPC practical and wanted to submit the full version of the whole IPC practical as the last page for IPC practical 9 Chemical Kinetics was missing.
After that I headed off to Marina Square to eat lunch with Jason. We had a great lunch. I ate terriyaki Ramen while he ate tonshyuu ramen which were on offer. We totally enjoyed and savoured the meal. The best was we love how cute and how lovely the waitress was at helping us using Japanese at the restaurant. It is a really must to try the food there. After that we went to esplanade library. I heard a couple of great songs from 2 CDs I borrowed there.

It was really great to study at Esplanade Library once again.
Not to forget I met junpei - the latin singaporean percussionist there, also one of my christian friends :)
It was really fun.
The best would be the Hong Kong Fish Slice Porridge from Holland Village Crystal Jade I had at night. I love how soft and watery the porridge it is. It totally has the right texture and is irrestible to the tastebuds.
I can go for the BATAM SERVICE LEARNING TRIP for NP LSCT, so happy. I just need to change my flight timing earlier. Interestingly enough, the flight back on 15th March is cheaper than the 17th one. Thank God.

Yesterday was Valentine's Day. I never did celebrate it with the special girl I had in mind. My reason being was that Valentine's day is not just a day to show love to the special person you treasure in your life. I was busy with other things.
In the newpaper, All around the world couples use different methods to show love, affection and appreciation for each other.

Justin Bieber goes back home without a Grammy at 53rd Grammy Awards. Personally,I believe Justin Bieber is a better actor than a singer. His pitch is too high meaning he will sing all the high pitch songs which are for girls and that causes many people to criticise his singing and his songs.

One of the best days today.
It was raining at Ngee Ann poly but I felt the enthusiasm in life to do what I want and need to do. It was a great day nonetheless. There's no school tmrw.

Newpaper have been showing all the Newpaper headlines showing the immoral world we are living in. It shows that we need to live with a greater discernment in the choices we make so as not to make the wrong decisions.
One of the newpaper articles reflected how weak Singapore Husbands are.

Can Spore men be house husbands?
No they can't
This is just the fact that Singaporean men lose life skills as they are pampered and spoiled by having maids when they themselves were children. This is due to Singapore's lowest fertility rate. Women Rights group AWARE is calling for government to support gender equality and 2 weeks paternity leave. Personally, I feel that husbands or fathers should have some time of paternity to use it to take care of their children so that they will be able to help their mothers to nurture and take care of their children when they are much younger.

A people's parade
The chingay parade just ended which saw a record of 8000 performers. It was held during 11- 12 Feb 2011 at 7pm on both days. 4000 sky lanterns ascended with fireworks at the close. It was a great parade with 2000 energy charged youths.

It is about how Indonesian villagers try to rebuild their homes after Mount Merapi erupted last October. It recounts their experiences and the troubles they have to go through. I hope many people living around the world will be able to help donate and help this people return back to their normal lives even after eruption devastatated their homes and many of their livelihood(crops).

Where Next?
After Tunisia and Egypt, mass protests have erupted in Algeria causing politicians in the region the jitters. The Tunisia rebellion that happened on January 14 which led to President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's fight from power was set off after Mohamed Bouazizi burned himself to death to protest being humiliated by police. Egypt continue to face protests where protesters vowed to stay camped in central Cairo Square until their demands for democracy will be met.

It was such an eventful day today. I not only was able to collect ang paos, yet I was also able to return back to Touch Young Arrows to help in the Chinese New Year celebrations at the Clementi Club. It was a great day. Cycling was next after that in which I cycled from east coast park to fort road for a Chinese New Year dinner haha. It was fun:) Newpaper showed that the world is really wicked and evil. Check this out.
Looked through the Newpaper today, I was convinced to see the evil we humans are capable of doing if we do not ever control our feelings and emotions.
Remember that we do what we think and visualise in our minds.

My paternal cousins, maternal cousins and cousins of cousins and cousins and church friends went to Batam together on the 4th of February. We had really great fun there. What we did first was to leave on the ferry from Singapore Tannah Merah Terminal to Indonesia Batam Jetty. Once I reached the jetty I was so shocked and amazed. At the Indonesian immigrations, i saw one of my SJI friends who I had a dispute last year. It was only when I dared to say hi to him did he look back and give me a fake smile. I tried to find him after reaching the checkpoint but I could not reach him. It was then that I followed everyone to Batam Tekong. I went to get a map of Batam and tried to look but sadly the counter person there was none left and she gave me a vague map of Batam. Looking disappointed, I went back. It was so cool. We took 2 mini buses there. The Indonesians were very funny humans. They told us how many more minutes to the destination and after many times of asking it will always be the same answer because the paths and roadwalks are straight and not crowded. When we finally reached a shore (area where Indonesians were living at and slaughtering fish with a shophouse), I saw cute children walking around. It has always been a pleasure to see people walking around. My cousins were playing frisbee with church friend. When the frisbee dropped to the beach, it was too late and such a waste that we were rushing for time and lost yet one of the fastest and furthest frisbee.When we finally reach the tekong( wooden board stilts with nails hammered on all sides), we were really glad. We came in 2 boats. We were so happy we reached shore. Upon dropping of luggage at rooms, we went around to choose our rooms. Sadly I got the room I did not want but I decided to stick with it. The sad thing comes when nosebleeds of 2 came. It was a killer. I din had 2 in one day. It felt so miserable. I lived on with it. Sadly I got pushed down into the water while we were having some fun, It was tough trying to overcome the pressure of the force of the waves as I had no strength at all. All I could do was trust people around me. In the end , the meals that I took was painful as I took extremely long time eating and had to put in effort just to eat sometimes. I managed only half hour rest catching up with people I haven't met for months.

Day 5 5th February 2011
The kelong we were in was the literally the best. Who could have thought we did anything there? We could lie down there for hours and hear conversations yet not get tired. We could lie down around anywhere and listen to the fun. The best thing was we could do anything there. By human nature, we would definitely talk and talk about anything under the sun. For me it was a healing process, None of the words mattered to me. Whatever I did in my life was totally ignored and rejected and just left to relax. After that, we had dinner and it was then it all started happening. Things started to be so messy that it was simply the best it could be. The indonesians at the kelong were the best people on earth. Who could have thought they would help us row out to the sea to buy it for us. haha. I love indonesian life so carefree- no stress. Then it all started happening. At night some of us started to feel too bored that we got to watch a movie or smthing. The finale was dinner with movie of Shaolin and BBQ food. Standard finale meals for Indonesian Island getaways. Then I was just eating. I felt so pain I decided to leave the meal area to go to the wooden stilt areas to have some fun. It was so hard to actually suffer. I started to rope in my church friends and cousins who were christians and we started jamming christian songs( Playing with a lot). It was how tough at the beginning. There were so many people around and the movie sound effects were noisy. It was not only hard for me but since I felt like dying. i went there. I was at first paranoid about taking beer and alcohols to relax. i say if I do that I will die faster because alcohol damages the liver. However it can only happen because there are many people around just drinking yet I don't even have any to venge my suffering on so I decided to take a sip. I chose beer in the end. Only option haha:) I went back took a sip and went to where the Indonesians were taking. I simply just took a mug of carlsberg and walked around not knowing what to do. Life has never been so miserable. I decided to go to one spot with one Indonesian pastor who has been helping me with the fishing. We started talking and we started playing the guitar. There were many comments said about me. I just ignored it and rested in God's pressence. Just then, some people on the other side decided to have some fun since it's chinese new year(glad they can cheer me up), they went to get the indonesian sparklers and firecrackers on motorboat with indonesians:) So cool man. Finally it started we were playing fire crackers around then suddenly one guy threw it up and suddenly one of the generators spoil. I stood at one corner hoping to see people stop. Ocassional stops of playing fire crackers were heard on the rectangular wooden stilts but in the end everyone continued on. Finally something happened. it was instant. The electrical energy was out and electrical supply was down. Yeah the generator failed. I can finally see the stars and remember all the people who I have talked in life. There was this one girl i literally liked but I have never taken up the courage to tell her. It makes it harder when other people keep asking it. It brings the pressure there:( Finally eventually, it all happen. Looking at the stars and remembering everyone who benefitted me in my life, I said at the end. i could not believe I was looking at some symbol or some linear pattern while it was out. Sadly I got nose bleed and people had to get me tissue paper in the dark:(. It was so sad and it's like what happened in titanic. Many people looked at the stars and some walk away. For me, I decided I was better after losing the tissue papers so I decided to leave the place. It was tough. I smsed some people. Sadly I couldn't talk to much people then but the people I smsed and tried calling were mostly girls during those periods whom I had known. It seemed it din happen because they were busy doing something. Deciding for once to stop being a busy body, I decided to rest 1 place and relax with whatever position I wanted to be in. Finally it all happen. I was bored so I started talking to Indonesians there. I had the pastor as the translator and me and the cousins managed our conversations with them. It was so cool how Indonesia was so free and carefree yet the moral levels of Indonesians are incredibly selfish. In the end, one of the Indonesian girls said I was handsome and I had to pee so I had one Indonesian girl holding the torchlight to show me where it is. I keep refusing avoiding the topic. We started talking about it. Coolest thing was that the generator failed because all the chemical engineers are here. Hurray! We needed someone who can actually fix the generator is a mechanic from Singapore who stays in Pasir Ris near Loyang West who help out. After 1-2 hours (about, cannot be too sure), the power came back to life. It all came back only after that but I have fallen asleep already:( Up till this day, I am still unsure if something should be done about it.
Maybe praying helps. I love this trip. It has been one of total realaxation. I have never felt so relax before in my life.

Ireland trip

I went to Ireland with Ngee Ann Poly LSCT on 30th september - 13 October
It was really a great place we went and visited. I really loved the trip. This was our itinerary of the whole trip:)

We reached Dublin airport and proceeded to globe trotters hostel from Dublin airport. On the way the tour guide gave us a brief introduction to the geographical background and historical background of Ireland. It was good to see the medieval buildings still used as banks and shops there

Day 2 1 October

We went to visit National Centre for Medical Genetics. National Centre for medical genetics mainly do research in cytogenetics, clinical genetics and molecular genetics. I learnt about polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and how they are done to test the genetics in humans. It was really interesting. NCMG has collaborations with UK and European hospitals to help do diagnostics for their patients

We proceeded to Merck Sharpe and Dohme at Swords where we learnt how the pharmaceutical plant is run there in the manufacturing of tablets and pharmaceutical products. MSD at Swords is very new and entering the corridors is like entering an art gallery. It is very artistic. There were presentation about what Merck produces and also information about the company. It was cool to learn that they work using the Six lean sigma which helps to make work done very effective with getting it right the first time principle. I am impressed by the rooms and the different machines that they have to commercially produce their products.

To me, I feel this is how newbie bboys become better.
1) Learn the technique

5) Play with different levels, shapes and other labanatation notation symbols and other features of dance moves.
6) Fuse it with different genres of dance
The key I feel is to always check with others if your technique and whatever you do is correct. Be willing to learn and willing to practise.
However I still have much more to master and I am very new in this.

It was a nice day in which I went for 4 sessions of evangelism first at BB campsite.
They are life in the spirit, main points of the gospel, reaching your generation and the priority of evangelism. It is very important for christian men and women to engage in works of Evangelism because very few people are doing that. It was a day of fun as I was being lame and trying to funny but I had a nice laugh at the ice breakers and learnt a lot from the crusade staff who were teaching. After that I headed off to esplanade library to look through cinema studies reference books but I din have time so I decided to borrow 2 books which will help me in making a film and left esplanade for clarke quay The Central NATASHA STUDIO:) to dance. When I reach there, hip hop lesson was halfway through. I decided not to join the class but after that I love how larry was teaching them. In the end Kpop we learnt lucifer and died because the steps are too fast and Shinee forces the step into the music but the steps are very magical and puzzle-typical:) Anyway after that was bboy beginner/intermediate. I learnt pretzel, variations of 6 step, pendulum and other cool ways of reinventing a similar step. What I need to know now is to work and master the technique:) Haha I ate dinner very late after I reach home and I am so happy the wireless is much faster now:) AND there is also mio tv:) yeah! Haha let's share the coolest tune of bboy:) haha!

This is the best week of my life. It never has been better. I am going to be the director for my new dance show soon! Anyway was sessioning with sadiq and gabriel seow, zeus and jeremiah li at esplanade- super epic:) SYOG rehearsal was dope but it could be done if they invited the people:( They really are busy people. the important dudes.:( anyway it was a big JOKE! never once in my life was there so much details put into one event. Anyway after that, jin feng, alex chan, tian sheng, johanthan ng and ms siew ching and me, we had a stupid jam all the way back to city hall station. THIS IS A . JOKE! come on esplanade is so empty every time I go there:( lol.. haha. Anyway after that I went home. I left home at 12am. I reached orchard plaza at about 1am. I was chatting with the taxi driver then it all kicked in. LAN - internet time. Who cares about people who smoke? COME ON- everyone is not perfect. Finally I was there. I needed to get an idea for a film going. I brought with myself guerilla film book but no com. In the end I have got no pen and book. I went to buy pen and book after asking for the location of it. Then after that the guy told me at bras basah station go to 7-11 near SMU. I went. I found it and that's when the miracle happen. the notebook cannot scan:) I bought another note book. After I came back from lan 1 hour later, it worked:) this is just an act of GOD. Hope to see ya frenz all at expo this sunday! please come:) see ya!

Campus Crusade LM

What was covered in crusade LM today was Justified freely. Tim Keller gave a illustration which basically summarises how justified freely help us live a more fulfilling and purposeful life for christ and ourselves. Human beings are like coke machines. Gospel is like coins. Putting coins into coke machine, nothing happens. You have to bang the coke machine, allow the coins to drop out before coke will come out. Many of us are like the coke machine. We must know how to bang it to get the coke. he then covers romans 3:21-28 explaining to us about how righteousness is given to us from God by faith. Philippians 3:9 tells us that righteousness comes from God and is by faith. The faith we know in modern world now is self-righteous. It is meaningless in this world today. Righteousness has now become a Validating Performance Record (VPR) which is something for us to show ourselves worthy and suitable for something( for example- job resumes, academic records to enter university). Many people find things to justify themselves but they get very disappointed when the thing they use to justify fail them. The truth is that God gaves us righteousness as a gift. I do believe that we believe that God's given righteousness and believing it by faith is a key to receiving his righteousness but most importantly to walk in his righteousness we need to spiritually breathe daily- inhale and exhale. We need to confess our sins and acknowledge our wrong doings by inhaling. In exhaling we can do it by surrendering what we have to God and letting God take control of it. This is an interesting and important message we christians need to know to walk right with God and to live for him. We need to know that there is nothing that we can do to make him love us more or justify for our salvation in him. It is about what he has done for us by sending his son to die for our sins which has brought this grace and righteousness to us when we believe it by faith.

Bboying 25/7/2010

It was great to be able to have an opportunity to bboy at RP after church and cell group yesterday. I reached RP and I started bboying with PSF and KMC crew people. I was drilling my 6 step and practising turtle. Yong Hui came later and he taught me turtle. He told me to bend my knee more when I am doing turtle so my legs can go upwards instead of outwards. In the end after countless of tries I finally got it. Kudos to Yong Hui for teaching me and helping me. That was probably my most crazy and vigorous session so far. This morning when I woke up I felt strain on my hip area and my right shoulder because yesterday while I was trying out chair freeze I accidentally flip over and sprain my right shoulder and hip. PSF crew was nice in their final battle. I love to see how they battle 1v1 and their transition from one move to another move. I have a long way to go. Anyway I am always so happy that RP is a nice place for all dancers to use to dance because the surface of the floor is either carpet or wood which is what dance studios need to practise and train dancing:) I found this 2 websites which are very helpful in teaching and guiding aspiring bboys who wants to learn the different moves. It is a good platform for them to ask questions and to seek help so that they can master a move in the shortest possible time. Electro test

Electricity circuits are easy to solve but I cannot seem to understand how to connect a circuit by using resistors on the breadboard. I could not get the current readings of the different resistors. In the end I flunked my electrotech practical test. zzzz... Anyway since it is done I shall not go bother about it. World Cup is over and most of us had a fun time watching the world cup matches. Malaysia Church Camp

It was great fun for me to be able to go for the chinese leaders church camp with my family to Tanjong Puteri Golf Resort. We went there on friday and came back on Sunday. My sisters and I did not participate in the sessions. We helped to take care of the kids and would wander off using the facilities while the adults are listening to the pastor sessions. Day 1 was good. It ended with world cup match(Portugal vs Brazil). It was a boring match because none of them scored and thus was uninteresting. Day 2 was cool and epic because it ended with us dressing up to look like Egyptians and we had to make our costumes. We spent the afternoon doing that. It was talent night at night and we danced to what they taught us. There was also a quiz to reinforce what the adults learn during the sessions. We rushed to watch world cup match( Urugay vs South Korea) Uruguay defeated South Korea 2-1. What a match. Day 3 is the last day. I slept while my bunk mates did not sleep the previous night. The next day they were tired and were trying to sleep after worship. I was just trying to use internet. After that session we went Jusco and we went shopping cum lunch. After lunch, I went to shop and I spent 200 RM. I bought shoes, bermudas, shirts and slippers. Jusco is a big place. I enjoyed myself and I bet others did too.
I will remember Joseph's example in the bible( Genesis 35- 39) and follow his example and apply it to live a life for God.

Bboy dancing progress

Bboying is tough because you will need to meet people to teach you by making you do with them. I cannot learn today because I got grounded. Oh well watching you tube videos and practising may make it better but it doesn't. I think people on the spot correcting you and teaching you to follow them and drilling yourself after following their demonstration will help you understand what to do for that dance step. For bboy now, I have only mastered 6 step and a little bit of 3 step. I still need to keep drilling because these 2 moves look very sloppy and not sharp. The rest of the footwork moves such as helicopter/coffee grinder will learn soon. I need to learn a combination of power moves/ top rock/ freezes/footwork and others. However to learn bboy well, one needs to be as fit as possible, know how to do handglides, handstands, one handed handstand, planchez(optional), headstand, freezes, kipups and rubber bands.
Learning dance requires more practice than theory. For me I have a complete guide to learn how to bboy. The different moves and the steps to get to it. It is only used as a reference. I prefer finding people and learning from them because they guide you through and ensure you know what you are doing. Breakbeats is also another genre of songs I am not clear yet so it may be tough.

There are few studios in Singapore that teach dance. I for one started being very passionate about dance this year and would love to learn to dance. Dancing helps me to stay creative, to relieve the stress and to enjoy the different dance moves. It is a good healthy form of art. Recognize studio and natasha studio are 2 studios that offer nice dance courses. There is also ECNAD but I shall not be covering that studio courses. Recognize studio offers many wide range of courses at Orchard Central and includes a wide range of courses at level 5. I believe that this is the newest dance studio in Singapore. Natasha studio have 2 branches and it covers various dance courses. It has cheap classes for 100 bucks per month if you get the unlimited package. With so much to offer, I hope that we can enrich our lives by learning forms of dance and practising it. It will be an enriching, exciting and fun experience as we learn dancing and make new friends. Hope you guys will be interested and would put in time to dance because you will appreciate it.

Romeo Knew Juliet Was a Minor But…

“We were in love!”

Say romance, and one invariably thinks of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. However, if their tale was retold today, these star-crossed lovers may have more than just the blood feud of their families to contend with – they may also get in trouble with the law.

Juliet, as her father describes, “hath not seen the change in fourteen years”, meaning she was a couple of weeks shy of her fourteenth birthday. The couple’s consummation of their marriage might land Romeo in jail for a very long time – based on laws prohibiting sex with minors.

These laws serve an important role in protecting young girls from paedophiles who prey on and exploit them. However where minors like Romeo and Juliet who are close in age and genuinely in love are concerned, these laws, aptly dubbed the “Romeo & Juliet laws”, become a blunt and ill-fitting instrument.

As teens and minors become less inhibited and more liberal, pre-marital sex and sexual activity are now more commonplace. The recent 2009 annual crime brief released by the Singapore Police Force revealed that statutory rape cases involving minors below 14 years old rose by a whopping 36.1% in 2009, thus further highlighting the need to re-examine such laws.

The Law in Singapore

Under Singapore law, Romeo could be charged under s. 376A of the Penal Code (Cap. 224, 2007 Rev. Ed. Sing.) or under s. 140(i) of the Women’s Charter (Cap. 353, 2009 Rev. Ed. Sing.).

Although both the Penal Code and the Women’s Charter invoke similar penalties of imprisonment or a fine or both, it is apparently rarely used in cases of consensual sex between minors. Instead, s. 140(i) of the Women’s Charter appears to be more commonly invoked even though it (curiously) falls under the heading of “Offences relating to Prostitution”.

This could be explained by the greater remedial flexibility of the Family Court (which may hear cases involving offences related to the Women’s Charter) and the harshness of the Penal Code provision.

Under s. 376A of the Penal Code, sexual penetration of a minor is criminalized. The scope of this offence extends to sexual activities other than vaginal intercourse, such as fellatio and anal intercourse. While one may argue that the other two activities are also criminalized under the infamous s. 377A of the code, it nevertheless underscores the harshness of the provision; one may not need to ‘go all the way’ to be exposed to criminal liability. Furthermore, it seems curiously skewed against males (or boys) – should Romeo reciprocate the act of oral sex, criminal liability would not be attracted.

The harshness of the Penal Code is more apparent in sentencing. The penalty of sexual penetration of a minor under s. 376A is either imprisonment of up to 10 years or a fine, or both. In the case of a minor below the age of 14, one may be liable for caning, imprisonment of up to 20 years, or a fine. As Juliet was actually thirteen, Romeo might be facing the prospect of both a very long time behind bars and a sore rear end if he had been charged under s. 376A.

In comparison, for the charge of voluntarily causing grievous hurt, one may be liable to imprisonment of 10 years, and a fine or caning under s. 326 of the Penal Code. Hence, if one considers the harm caused, it appears that the punishment prescribed under s. 376A is wholly disproportionate especially since consensual sex with a minor is essentially a moral crime.

Under s. 140(i) of the Women’s Charter, a person who has carnal connection with a girl under 16 except by way of marriage is liable for imprisonment for a term of up to 5 years and a fine of up to $10,000. Its scope appears to be confined to the act of vaginal intercourse itself.

In comparison, the penalties for sex with a minor under s. 140(i) of the Women’s Charter are less harsh. Furthermore, it is observed that the Courts in Singapore appear to take a more sympathetic approach in sentencing young offenders, taking into account the unique facts and circumstances of each case and preferring to impose probation instead of imprisonment. It was reasoned in PP v. Mok Ping Wuen Maurice, [1999] 1 Sing. L.R. 138 that “[y]oung offenders are in their formative years and chances of reforming them into law-abiding adults are better. The corrupt influence of a prison environment and the bad effects of labelling and stigmatisation may not be desirable for young offenders.”

The approach taken by the Attorney-General in preferring to prosecute offenders under s. 140(i) rather than s. 376A, and that of the Courts in sentencing is to be lauded. As Singapore does not recognize any defence other than a reasonable belief that the minor was older than 16, the current approach appears to mitigate the harshness of the penalties.

However, the current state of the law is still unsatisfactory. The original purpose of statutory rape or sex with minor laws was to protect young, unwed females from being robbed of their virginity; it is essentially a moral law. A strong case may be made for maintaining the provisions to prevent older, mature men from sexually exploiting minors and girls. However, offending minors are different from the former category and should be treated differently.

Where minors engage in acts of ‘love’ and intimacy, it would be unfair to hold one party criminally liable, especially since it could be a permanent stain on his record. After all, it is unavoidable for one to err in his youth. Furthermore, usually it is not the girl who makes the complaint, but her furious parents seeking ‘justice’ from the law. However, this does little good. As the Attorney-General, Prof. Walter Woon, aptly puts it at the third Children’s Society lecture in 2009, “[s]ending them to jail per se would not make them reflect on their lives. That is the last thing that is going to happen.”

The Law Elsewhere

Romeo might be better off being charged in another jurisdiction. Like Singapore, many jurisdictions around the world have had to grapple with the problem of maintaining statutory rape laws in order to protect the interests of young girls, while ensuring that boys like Romeo would not be end up as criminals a result of an act of ‘love’.

In the US, Romeo might be able to plead the exception of closeness in age as a valid defence to statutory rape. For example, it is an affirmative defence to sexual assault in the state of Texas “if the actor was fewer than 3 years older than the victim.”

Similarly, in Canada the exception close-in-age applies; minors aged 14 or 15 years old may have sex with a partner who is less than 5 years older, while children aged between 12 and 13 years old may have sex with a partner 2-3 years older.

However, the exception does not apply in the UK. Under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 (U.K.), 2003, c. 42, s. 13, a person under 18 who commits the offence engaging in sexual activity with a child, defined under s. 9, will be deemed to have committed the same offence as if he did so as an adult above 18. However, the same section provides for lower penalties where the offender is a minor.

Conclusion

Statutory criminalization of consensual sex between minors ought to be abolished. The criminalization of sex between minors is a separate issue from the concern with sexual exploitation of young girls: the former being a moral crime while the latter involves some tangible form of harm. With the changing of social mores, and more teens taking a liberal stand towards pre-marital sex, the continued criminalization of sex between minors will only pave the way for a collision course between social values and criminal conduct. Perhaps, one way to resolve the problem now is to recognize the exception of the closeness in age in a dual-standard approach similar to the Canadian stand, and to allow greater room for sentencing, such as community work and counselling in addition to probation, to sharpen the blunt instrument that is currently the sledgehammer of the law.

Yeah! I improved in my sales of keychain. I did not know why I went to sell keychain on considering I sold only 2 keychains the first time I did it. I guess I was in need of cash. Anyway I reached there early and managed to sell 2 before I went for lunch. In the end, I sold 17 including 1 to my TYA frenz. Anyway Sales job is tentative and depends on people's attitude. The product also plays an important part.
Anyway I guess I was take up the course in Digital and Precision Engineering because I want to get the scholarship. Anyway I already I want to do when I get back my results. 2 more weeks for O levels results to be released:) I am not sure if it is a good thing or not.Haha sigh...

Taiwan Trip

Hi guys O level is long over. I have tried to find a job and i finally found 1 job but it is about selling keychains. The first time I sold keychains was after I came back from taiwan.I went taiwan from 9 dec - 18 dec immediately after my sis completes her A levels. Anyway Taiwan trip was great and fun. My cousins who i met there were cool.
Here is the schedule and the places I went in taiwan
(9-11 December at Taipei)
On 9 dec, I met my drama camp frenz catherine at shi lin night market. I had to sms to taiwan the night before to plan where we are meeting at taipei. Anyway when we met we started chatting about some random ppl in her school and my school. I leave you to guess what we were talking about. It was interesting that she had 2 sister and she was taller than her older sister.
On 10 dec we went to the taipei zoo in the morning to see pandas and we visited zheng zhi University. We went to drink coffee and eat fabulous ice cream. After that we went dan shui and went to a port there. The port is marvelous and it is where
many couples went there at weekends to date.

On 11 dec, we took high speed train to kaoshiung. It took only 1.5 hour.

Take a look at this. Have a nice laugh. We saw this at the high railway station in kaoshiung. I was laughing so hard that day.
On 11 dec, we went to my uncle's church first. I met my cousins and they were preparing for a skit for christmas. I gave some tips and helped them out in their drama.

On 12 dec, we went to uncle's church for service. After that my father's frenz brought me to eat nice western lunch. After that we went to 西子湾. The scenery was great. Zhongshang university had the scenery of the beach and the sea. After looking at the campus of Zhongshan University we went to cijin to see the waves and eat seafood. The waves pounding on the rocky coast form nice water geysers when high tides come in.

On 13 dec, we went to kending national park. The place was great. We went to a shopping centre and sat the kaoshiung flyer which was much cheaper than Singapore's flyer.

On 14 dec, We took train to Yuanlin with my aunty.

Upon reaching Yuanlin on 14 dec, we went to eat buffet lunch. After that we went cycling at taichung but my younger sis fell and injured and we went back to my grandaunty's house for dinner. No more shopping plans because of my younger sis' injury. How unlucky! My younger sis had her wounds treated at taiwan. She broke one of her bones in her left arm. Painful! She was crying when she banged into the concrete wall. I saw what happened but I could not stop because she was too fast.
On 15 dec, we went jiu zhu cultural village. It was fun esp the rides however I din go for mayan adventure. I was just scared... Haha thrilling rides not my cup of tea. After that we went to watch performances of hill tribes in taiwan. My older sis and I went shopping at night at Yuanlin. I felt sleepy and I ended up walking too far. In the end I got lost and tried to find my way back to my grandaunty's house. Luckily I managed to find it. Anyway in the end, i had to ask my granduncle to follow me to find my sis. In the end we found her at where she and I decided to meet. I was very relieved and laughed at my stupidity.

On 16 dec, we went shopping with my granduncle's wife. She brought us to somewhere in taichung which are wholesalers' shop. I bought many clothes there. I could grab good deals. I also saw my aunty who was so much younger than my dad. Haha! She had a very cute daughter and my 2 sisters carried on playing with her. We went to the park. While I emo-ed and looked around the park, my 2 sis, the young girl, Liya and my aunty were cam-whoring.
On 17 dec, we stayed at yuanlin. My cousin and his girlfriend met us and we chatted at night at my grandaunty's house. He looked different the last time I met him 4 years ago.
On 18 dec, we went tianwei and went to my big-aunty's house. After talking to my big-aunty about her baptism with her pastor, we went to see the flowers and the nice scenery. We ate japanese cuisine for lunch but our stomachs were too full. We left airport earlier and reached taoyuan international airport at 4pm. We stayed at the airport until 9pm before we took a plane back to singapore.

The 9 days were fun and happy days. I wish to return to taiwan soon when I have the money again.

O level papers

So far O levels has been better than expected except for english. I did not know why my management of english paper 1 was not appropiate. I spent so much time writing the essay that I had to cut short my situational. English Paper 2 I had some questions wrong and I did not know why I did not finish rewriting my answers on a new piece of paper as my original one was full of cancelling. Anyone E maths paper 1 and 2, and A Maths paper 1 were good:) I just hope I can get A1 for the maths:) Anyway I cannot wait for tomorrow because tomorrow I can watch a dance performance and slack for a while before going back to full power mugging. Anyway I wish everyone having O levels good luck and to be careful to not make careless mistakes because they are not worth it:)

Supernatural feeling

I do not know why but since this week I have been just slogging my way through yet I have not felt least of all tired. Anyway I will just work as hard as I can. I hope that eventually I can get into Hwa Chong. Anyway those who are not able to study or are trying and cannot find the motivation, one needs to work to build up an atmosphere which you feel comfortable in to start studying. Only when one is able to feel happy and at peace will he be able to understand what he is learning and enjoy the process. O levels is officially ending in 16 days:) I wish everyone best of luck and others who are still studying their way through:)I am looking forward to friday's dance performance Unleash at TCT at 7pm:)

Exams Frenzy!!!

O levels is only 27 days away. I wonder how is everyone with their revison with their O levels. Anyway those taking A levels, PSLE or EOYS/FYE, good luck and jiayou. Do not panic during your revision. If you need to burn the midnight oil, Do have supper or drink something or else you will seriously die from fatigue.. Anyway approaching teachers for help is the best solution. Other tips to do well for the exams is to look up the internet for resources. Anyway this week can be considered one of the better weeks compared to last week- the zombie mugger week. At least this week i slept earlier but luckily i got the mugger's spirit. Haha anyway I try to get the balance out of it by playing tennis and using internet. These ways of relieving stress helps but never waste too much time on it. Make sure you are in a good mood and study because that is when you will study the best.
Anyway Jiayous to O level, A levels, PSLE and FYEs:)

I like dancing when i started but yesterday was even more interesting. First time i tried bboying. Thanks to sadiq, selva, matthias and suffyan who gave me an opportunity. I learnt the basics and tried the basics, once in a while i go free flow with the music. Anyway I must say bboy is a lot of hard work.

My prelim results is what i call the mess up scores.
Anyway can u believe that after all my stupid and ambitious boasting that the papers were easy, I only scored an L1B5 of 23 with average of 57plus.. The breakdown is as follows
English:66
A Maths:56(Super Lucky and this subject made me think i was perfect in my studies!! I owed so many people money because i bet with them i will get full marks for that paper)
E Maths:51(stupid lah score so low .. )
Chem:56
Physics:57
Geography:70 (LUCKY LOOSER!!)

Higher Chinese:43(going to get A1 if possible)
Actual L1R5 is 25 if i din put in Chinese O levels..

Today was really cool-one of the funner days I have in my life. I reached school early because i was firm on leading prayer. It was very funny arguing with spasm master Sze Yang and peng yi. After that, I met myles and the other prefects who are in charge of assembly. I went into the administration office to lead the prayer after the announcements were told. I realised that it was too long although i have shortened my prayer by a lot. After that ,I found out that many people did not hear my prayer.. Nevermind I always have another chance. E MATHS PAPER 2 is easy but requires 5-10 mins in order to become a fair paper. Anyway I pissed Ryan Tay and he wanted to bash me up. Luckily I cooled down. After E Maths exam, I decided to go lixu house study. After eating lunch at King Albert Park macs, We headed to his house. When we reach there, I enjoyed MTV ASIA/MTV CHINA and using com simultaneously. This sense of enjoyment and freedom is neglected in daily lives as we quicken the pace of our feet and rush back. We never have time to enjoy life and cherish the precious friends and moments of our pride and achievements. Anyway I believe that it is only when we look things positively will we be able to reflect our best inner self. Anyway upon reaching there, We played com then watched TV simultaneously. After staying at lixu's house, I went to west mall buy gifts. I met Selva, Suffyan and Muthu at CCK LOT 1 library at 6 plus. Anyway we had fun talking nonesense:). In the end after dinner, I was taunted by them to get one of the shopkeeper girl's number and they would treat me to a drink. In the end, I tried and I bought a nicer badge from her. We bid farewell and left on our own ways. However, Today is considered one of the days when life is not boring

Day Of His Power

Today was a super fast day. The lessons were very draggy. I could not stand it. The people in my class are like so distracted and cannot concentrate on doing work. Prelims is like in 10 days and they are so slacker..... Anyway I hate Justin and Kenneth at the front. They are like the stupid posers who think they are perfect and comment on what people do, It is very irritating! Anyway after lessons were finally over, I went to play basketball with 436. Basketball is a very fun sport and it requires teamwork and good cooperation of teamwork. One must also trust the other player so the team can play well. Anyway the team shuffling is not fair at all. My team comprise me, terrence, leonard, zachery, vincent, ryan and bradley. The other team is zhiyi, weixuan, ryan yuan, caleb , vivek and others. Wow but it was very fun blocking them from shooting. WOAH!!! Basketball is so much fun, so much better than soccer. Anyway after playing basketball, I proceeded to lan and play dota and Cs... after playing 2 hours of dota and cs, I used facebook and listened to music. I rushed to get some studying guides for O levels at popular before rushing to day of his power at indoor stadium. I reach indoor stadium at 7:15. I met wei lit then we went in. Wow the indoor stadium was crowded with people from churches in Lovesingapore. We started worship at 730pm. We sang till 8:00 and started praying for the governement, the church. After that we learnt about the 7 areas of transformation and pastor khong went through the 7 areas of cultural influence. I went up and pray for Arts and entertainment. Actually I was supposed to go Education and School but Too many people were at education so i decided to pray for something else. I believed this was prophetic and was divine intervention of what singaporean christians do. Today was indeed a enriching day for me... I am very energetic and high even though i have so much draining activities.
Anyway I need to go study hard for my prelims
